Antarctic researchers break the ice

A second successful winter voyage aboard the ice-breaking research vessel SA Agulhas II into the Antarctic Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) has been undertaken by members of the University of Cape Town (UCT) Sea Ice Research Team.

Mr Vernon Collis has a long association with the Department of Civil Engineering. He is qualified as both a professional engineer and a professional architect. His main contribution to the department to date has been in the area of designing for sustainability in civil engineering, a field in which he is an acknowledged expert with extensive experience in both Africa and Asia.

Iain Paton recently made history as the first person to graduate from the newly introduced Professional Masters Degree in Geotechnical Engineering (MGeotech) programme.  Iain’s degree was awarded with distinction and his dissertation entitled An investigation into the geotechnical nature of aeolian coversands in the Knysna area of the Southern Cape.

Congratulations to Kevin Sack who received the SA Association for the Advancement of Science – S2A3 medal. The medal serves to commend outstanding research students graduating at the Master's level. Kevin’s Master’s degree was awarded with distinction in the dissertation and the degree with distinction. His supervisor was Dr Sebastian Skatulla.

Civil graduate to represent Africa in Dublin

Congratulations to Daniel Avutia who has won the National Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining Young Persons’ Lecture Competition for his lecture entitled: Analytical study of sinkhole propagation in South Africa. He will represent Africa at the World Championships in Dublin, Ireland in October 2015 where he will compete with the winners from the other five continents.

Off to Paris for an international conference

Olukayode Alao, an MSc student in CoMISRU, has been selected for an oral and poster presentation at Our Common Future under Climate Change, an international scientific conference to be held in Paris from 7 – 10 July 2015. His supervisor, A/Professor Hans Beushausen said, “We are extremely proud of Olukayode, and it is an excellent opportunity for him to showcase his work.” 

2014 Young Engineer of the Year Award

Makotsene Makgalemele, a 2008 civil engineering graduate of the University of Cape Town, was named the 2014 Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) Young Engineer of the Year. The judges looked for leadership, as well as outstanding performance in areas including technical achievement on a project, educational achievement, and contributions to sustainable development.
