Dr Sebastian Skatulla is a recipient of the Claude Leon Merit Award for Early-Career Researchers which is given to encourage the outstanding scholarly achievements as a young researcher.
The Concrete Materials & Structural Integrity Research Unit has been successful in securing new funding for its research. In the past, the Unit was mainly funded by the Cement & Concrete Institute (C & CI), who channelled funding from the cement industry to tertiary institutions.
Professor Alphose Zingoni’s book, Vibration Analysis & Structural Dynamics for Civil Engineers (ISBN 978-0-415-52256-4), published by CRC Press (Taylor & Francis UK), was formally launched in the New Engineering Building on the Upper Campus of UCT on 15 April 2015.
Dr Sebastian Skatulla in the Department of Civil Engineering has been elected as Member of the Board of Directors of the International Society for Computing in Civil and Building Engineering (ISCCBE) from 15 February 2015.
At a function hosted by Programme Director, Prof. Alphose Zingoni (former HOD), 16 exceptional students from across UCT were presented with Bathe Leadership Scholarships by UCT Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Max Price. Among the recipients was Nozipo Gwaza (2nd-Year BSc Civil Engineering student). The Department conveys its hearty congratulations to her.
This year UCT was honoured with the SAICE Student Chapter award. The awardees are Byron Mawer (Chairman) Sam Wegener (Vice-Chairman), Nishalin Govender (Vice-Chairman), Astrid Lambrechs, Lauren Brooks, David Le Roux, Mehdi Haider and Thembinkosi Silinda.
Hazvinei Tsitsi Tamuka Moyo graduated in June with her MPhil in Transport Studies from the Department of Civil Engineering. Her supervisor was Prof Romano Del Mistro and her thesis topic was “An investigation of the perceived consequences to employees of reducing employment related trip end choices in Cape Town.”
Staff members in the Concrete Materials & Structural Integrity Research Unit (CoMSIRU) have been extremely busy over the past 12 months. They have graduated 21 postgraduate students and supervised 25 final-year undergraduate thesis projects.

Dr Denis Kalumba, a geotechnical engineering expert who specialises in foundations, is helping to ensure that South African houses stand firm – by developing the curriculum and carrying out training in the basic principles of geotechnical engineering for all National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) inspectors in the country.
